A little of history of martial arts

Martial Art is a term derived from Latin and means the “art of Mars” (Mars was the Roman god of War). However, there is proof that people practice wrestling from the 20th century BCE. Also, there is evidence that Babylonians used hand-held weapons in combat by the ancient near the 18th century BCE. However, the most ancient martial art was the Kalaripayattu which appears in Kerala (India) 1000 years BCE.

In the first Olympics Games in Ancient Greece appears the Pankration, which was an event where two fighters (almost without rules) contested until one of them gives up.

Types of martial arts

There are many criteria to classify the martial arts but the main are: the techniques used (striking, grappling), its origin (traditional vs derived), and its purpose (self-defense, military, sports, fitness, etc).

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA):

Who hasn’t watched or hear about UFCBellator, or other leagues where two fighters combat in a steel cage in three rounds of 5 minutes each, almost everything is allowed.

Krav Maga:

It is a martial art developed by the Israel Security Establishment; it is a combination of many styles. The aim of Krav Maga is to react efficiently to real extreme situations,  who practices must be as good in offense and defense techniques.

Taekwondo:

Taekwondo was born in Korea, although is an Olympic sport, it has the most incredible kicks of all martial arts. The aim of Taekwondo is to create powerful strikes through training: speed, control of the mass center and reaction force. Those elements allow the Taekwondo fighter performs amazing kicks that are unique.

Muay Thai:

Muay Thai (the art of the eight limbs) was born Thailand it’s famous by using the eight points to strike: elbowspunchesknees, and shins (instead of feet). It becomes famous in America thanks to the 1989 film Kickboxer with Jean-Claude Van Damme. It reveals the extreme training style of Muay Thai fighter. The Ong Bak and The Protector movies starring Tony Jaa are classics.

Karate:

This Japanese martial art is famous for its powerful punches and kicks. You can find many styles, but one of the most popular is Kyokushin. Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White are famous actors that practice Karate, the three movies of Karate Kid that has 2 seasons in YouTube streaming.

Kung Fu or Wushu:

The kung fu was born in Buddhist temples in China during Ming dynasty, The main characteristic because the practitioners imitate animals like tiger, eagle, dragon, snake, etc. where the person made random movements to avoid attacks and Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Daniel Wu.

Ninjutsu:

It is the art of sigile; it was born in feudal Japan they were experts in assassination, spy and others mission that Samurai considered that goes against their honour, the film Ninja Assassin (2009) starring by Rain (Jung Jeoong) and Ninja and its sequel Ninja the shadow of a tear (starring by Scott Adkins), another funny movie are Beverly Hills Ninja(1997) starring by Chris Farley and Chris Rock. 

Wing Chun:

Do you wonder what martial art practice Robert Downey Junior in Sherlock Holmes films? or, what about the martial art that practice at the beginning Bruce Lee, well the answer is Wing Chun. Wing Chun consist in fast and strong arms and legs, hits and defenses, practitioners.
